Stop Your Instanity!
We all have seen the status updates of great quotes. Some people update their status quotes three times a day! They quote their favorite speaker and let us know they 'are so grateful for the sun rising today' and 'how blessed my life is'. Some of you are laughing because you are reflecting on it right now.
At the risk of being the most hated person on facebook, not foreign to me, I say this because people are losing the point of self help...TRUST YOURSELF. We have lost that. We turn to astrologers, psychics, and self help gurus. Cut it out! You are hurting yourself.
A muscle not used becomes weak and eventually useless. Our intuition or instinct works the same way. We think others have the answers and choose to go along with it, when really it shows our insecurities with ourselves. Having worked with many of the self help gurus a lot of you read, I can tell you they do not know everything and definitely don't live it. Yes, they have a good message, they have good intentions by teaching you, but like most humans on this earth, need to learn to practice their own lessons! Most of them do not practice what they preach, and neither do the people who update their status every 10 mins with a new message.
For instance, learn about the person you are taking tips from. A lot of you love Ghandi. Yes yes, he changed the world. He had a great message. He taught a lifestyle later used by King Jr. and others. But here is the rule I had written about before, to which a lot of you wrote back saying you loved it, but forgot it only days later! For every expressed side, there is a repressed side. The repressed side is the exact opposite of what is being expressed.
When someone updates their status every 10 mins with a new message of 'light and love', usually suffers from lack of it. Look at the Senator who recently opposed gay marriage..and what did we find out months later? Ah..pictures of him in a gay affair. Surprise? Don't think so!
When Ghandi is preaching non-violence and integrity, well, he abused his wife (and admitted to it) and had an affair with a woman named Sarla Devi where love letters were discovered by both sides. So yes, he has a great message, but love the message while keeping in mind it's not him you love. You don't know him!!
One of the well known Toronto / East Indian based speakers has been Tiger Woods-ing a lot of girls I know! They all think they are special, but by his message of preaching love and sincerity in your life, has shown the opposite. I keep quiet because it's not my place to say anything, but it bothers me that these girls feel special seeing someone in the fantasy light rather reality light. They then turn around and start to preach exactly what they hear, but can't practice! It's an unexamined life and it's a fictional life. One of his followers likes to portray herself as a 'life coach'. That's fine and her right, but her followers failed to realize that her preaching about love, soulmates, enlightenment, etc, resulted in her being with a guy that was cheating on her (which she probably still doesn't know) and immediately after breaking up with him, hooked up with one of the servers from a party I had recently. Again, it's her right if she wishes, but her followers should realize that their answers will be less realized by blind leading the blind pretending to see.
Most recently we have pretty boy James Ray. Mr. Ray or the new Jim Jones as I like to call him, has a sweat lodge. Of course because he saw Native Indians doing it (for hundreds of years) he decides he is now capable of doing it. Someone dies.
Mr. Ray is now under arrest for manslaughter, and not ONCE has he called the family. Not ONCE has he said he is responsible because he gave an interview where he denies full responsibility by insinuating they were having such a good time they wanted to die. What is the basis of his book? Take responsibility for your life. Hmm...maybe he should have read his own book?
In all the cases above, the message is great. But the message is the same. In all cases, every author, every book all say bury your ego, bury your fears, and go forward on faith. So instead of becoming a self help junkie, try being a self loving junkie! It costs less, and the rewards are SO much greater!
Remember, my core business is to sell self help books. I love it. I love seeing people find themselves and attain greater things for themselves. I do it, and I wish you all would too. But I also have a sense of compassion for those who think they are getting something when really they are hiding. To get a tip or get a boost when you are tired or lost, then go to a person you respect and ask for help. But do not RELY on it instead of doing it yourself. This is where it's unhealthy.
